LiDAR

With our staff of experienced professionals and our significant investment in technology research, we at Sanborn not only stay abreast of the newest and most effective developments in the mapping and GIS industry, we help to innovate them.

LiDAR (light detection and ranging), a technology whereby a laser beam is fired at the ground from an airplane to measure distance to the ground, emerged a few years ago as a fast and effective way to gather digital elevation model (DEM) data. With our state-of-the-art Leica ALS50 (83kHz) and Optech ALTM 2050 (50kHz) LiDAR sensors, several years' experience, and many thousands of square miles of data successfully acquired and processed, Sanborn sets the highest standard of accuracy and reliability for LiDAR technology.

LiDAR Sensor Features:

  • 83kHz model produces elevation data of unparalleled density and unprecedented low cost per posting
  • Handles faster air speeds
  • Adjustable scan frequency, scan angle, and pulse repetition frequency
  • Laser intensity for highly detailed images that approximate medium-resolution photographs even in the darkness of night
  • Multiple return measurement

QCoherent LP360 Software
QCoherent's LP360, LiDAR software for ArcGIS, eliminates the challenges faced by today's LiDAR users in a cost-effective, easy to use manner. This unique extension, for the ESRI® environment, incorporates LAS point cloud data into ArcGIS using a specially-designed ArcMap™ data layer. With LP360, LiDAR data can now be completely integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS).

Virtual Geomatics VG4D Software
Virtual Geomatics’ VG4D, LiDAR software includes solutions for both high-end production by LiDAR mapping professionals and LiDAR data exploitation by end-users.  The VG4D software suite includes stand-alone, end-to-end, single vendor solutions as well as an ArcGIS extension and a “Free” LiDAR Viewer capable of visualizing high density, County size, point clouds all at once with on-the-fly 3D TIN rendering and 3D contour display.

Why Use LiDAR?
While it may not be suitable for every project, LiDAR offers several advantages over traditional methods of data collection. It is accurate, quick, cost-effective, and can successfully define intermediate surfaces such as treetops (canopy) and power lines. And while stereo compilers can selectively collect a limited number of points per hour from photography, LiDAR allows the real-time accumulation of tens of thousands of points per second. Furthermore, the data are immediately available for DEM generation or topographic mapping.

Software Innovations
For ultimate accuracy, we realized that LiDAR data required adjustment to remove residual systematic errors. For this purpose, we developed our Process for LiDAR Aerial Triangulation (PLAT) software. This software enables the combination of multiple strips of overlapping lidar data into a single block. Using ground control and automatic strip-to-strip matching techniques, PLAT adjusts the entire data set, thereby removing residual systematic errors and biases.

FASE
At a very early stage, Sanborn recognized the need for a tool that could generate accurate, yet aesthetically pleasing, contours from lidar data. Sanborn’s Filtering And Surface Estimation (FASE) software combines all available LiDAR surface information, including strategically placed mass-points and breaklines, as well as land cover information like water bodies and vegetation, to estimate a new bald-earth surface model. The resulting surface is extremely accurate and yields cartographic contours that are free from LiDAR noise and aboveground artifacts. In addition, with the appropriate use of breaklines, FASE will correctly model drainage areas and flood plains.

By identifying and resolving lidar deployment, data acquisition, and post-processing challenges, Sanborn offers the most valuable and comprehensive LiDAR services in the mapping industry today.
